"Something weird has been going down at the (Ardbeg) Distillery....."
Description
Ardbeg Heavy Vapours Whisky
The Ardbeg distillery is located on the south side of the Isle of Islay, in the small settlement of Ardbeg from which it takes its name. It has been producing whisky since 1798, but only began commercial production in 1815.
Having changed ownership over the years, it is now owned by the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) group. It is renowned for producing a heavily peated Islay Whisky. The distillery themselves state "Ardbeg Ten Years Old is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all". They use malted barley which is sourced from the maltings in Port Ellen (also on the Island of Islay).
Interesting Fact: The brand name Ardbeg is an anglicisation of 'An Àird Bheag' which is Scottic Gaelic, and means 'The Small Promontory'.
"Something weird has been going down at the Distillery"
With their Heavy Vapours Limited Edition, Ardbeg have removed their legendary purifier from their still. Due to this, differing flavours are captured and bottled - darker notes and flavours, which fill the senses. This is an ominous dram of aromatic pungency..... "Heavy Vapours will rise".
The nose brings intense, pungent and aromatic aromas. Smoky, sweet, with almost farmyard scents, and hints of creosote. A splash of water unlocks dark chocolate cream and more smoke.
On the palate there comes a burst of bittersweetness, along with cardamom, peppermint and coffee. Dark chocolate and eucalyptus tantalise the taste buds, which overly the fruity floral notes common at the heart of Ardbeg. Aniseed and cinnamon float delicately across the tongue.
The finish remains bold, staying strongly in the palate.
