Bluecoat American Dry Gin 70cl
A deliciously citrus forward gin from America
Bluecoat American Dry Gin
This gin was launched in 2006, and was created in the first craft distillery to open in Pennsylvania since before prohibition.
As with all gins, the main flavour profile has to be juniper (to one degree or another). What sets Bluecoat aside is that they use only organic Mediterranean berries. These give a rich, fruity, spicy, and earthy note to the gin, and start the bold flavour profile for which Bluecoat are proud.
The exact botanical recipe is kept a secret, but it's a classic dry gin and is distilled in a custom built copper pot still. They also use "citrus peels not found in most gins" - which gives a defined citrus forward profile to this gin too.
On the nose the juniper (in the form of pine resin) and citrus really come through. The taste leads from this, and fresh citrus really comes out with the juniper present, but not as forward as the aroma would suggest. There is an earthy spice to it from cardamom, with the finish being not too long, leaving a touch of almost sweet orange peel.
Fun fact: The term "Bluecoats" refers to the soldiers who fought in the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783) against the British Crown.

This works particiularly well in a Martini - giving a more citrus note to it. However, it also works well in a classic Gin & Tonic. For this though, any strong flavours will overpower the flavour profile in the gin, so we recommend a neutral tonic such as Double Dutch Indian Tonic Water.
Pour 50ml of the gin into a large glass filled with ice, and pour in 150 - 200ml of tonic. Garnish with a slice of lime.
