Luxardo Maraschino Originale 70cl
A deliciously sweet cherry liqueur made with marasca cherries
Luxardo Maraschino Originale
Still produced today according to the original recipe which was created by Girolamo Luxardo in 1821, Luxardo's Maraschino liqueur is now known the world over.
Using the marasca cherries which are harvested at the beginning of every summer, Luxardo place these in an alcoholic infusion for up to three years. This is done in larch-wood vats together with leaves and branches from the cherry tree as well, imparting additional unique flavours.
After this lengthy resting period, both the liquid and cherries are distilled in traditional copper pot stills. The heart of this distillate is then taken and again allowed to mature again in ash-wood vats. Finally, the distillate is transformed into the liqueur we know and love by adding a simple syrup of water and sugar.
The resulting liqueur is crystal clear in colour. It has an aroma typical of marasca cherries and a roasted nuttiness. The taste is smooth with a sharpness from the cherries, joined with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla and orange marmalade.
Fun fact: The iconic tall green bottle with its red cap is still hand-plaited in straw within the company itself. It resembles the Maraschino bottles which were produced in Zara in the early days. The straw was wrapped around the bottle to ensure there was no damage during transportation.
