Normindia Barrel Aged Gin 70cl
A delicous french gin aged in calvados casks
Description
Normindia Barrel Aged Gin
The story of Domaine du Coquerel (House Coquerel) who make the range of Normindia Gins begins in 1937, when René Gilbert founded the company.
They are based in Manoir du Coquerel which is situated in Normandy. Originally they started with the production of Calvados (which they still make) and are within the area where AOC Calvados can be made.
Launched in 2015, The original Normindia Gin was created by Pierre, the third generation of the Domaine du Coquerel family. It is made entirely at the Coquerel distillery. Here they macerate the botanicals, distil in a traditional calvados copper column still, and bottle. They don't outsource any stage.
The original Normindia gin is created using fifteen different botanical ingredients. Being produced in a distillery more reknowned for calvados, it should come as no surprise that apples are one of these. As well as this they use oranges, cinnamon, coriander, juniper, cloves, ginger, lily as well as seven others - which are kept a distillery secret.
Fun Fact: The name Normindia comes from Normandy and India. This is a homage to the botanical ingredients from both regions which are used making the gin.
To create their Barrel Aged Gin, they take the original gin and then age it in three different casks for between 6 and 12 months. Each of which adds a different nuance to the final gin. These are then blended to give the final gin.
The three different casks are:
1) Old 190L bourbon casks, which previously contained a blend of 4 - 8 year old Coquerel Calvados. This adds notes of cooked apples and vanilla. 2) 300L French Oak barrels, which previously contained freshly distilled Calvados. This adds freshness to the gin. 3) New 300L French Oak barrels, which bring elegant woody aromas
The resulting gin, whilst retaining the character of the original Normindia gin, had additional depth and flavour.
On the nose there are aromas of apple, a hint of wood, vanilla and citrus. The flavour brings orange, with a touch of lemon. Baking spices, clove and cinnamon come through as well as delicious spicy apple. The time in calvados casks shines through with expressive hints of young calvados.
The finish of this gin is exceptionally smooth, and well rounded - vanilla, and hints of warm butter linger deliciously on the palate.

Perfect Serve
We found this exceptionally easy to drink as a sipping gin. A shot over a large ice cube is delicious.
However it also works as a longer drink with tonic. Take a large glass filled with ice and add 50ml of gin. Gently pour over 150ml of your chosen tonic (we like East Imperial Tonic Water with this one) and stir gently. Garnish with a slice of orange.
