Opihr Gin - Far East Edition
The ancient spice route started in the Far East, and it's from this area that Opihr look to for this edition of their gin. Heat and spice are well known Far East flavours, and in this edition the 'smouldering spice' is easily found.
The original Opihr is already a spicy gin, but this edition increases the spice even more through the fragrant and mouth-numbing Szechuan pepper (this is actually a seed husk of Chinese ash trees, and is used in many staple dishes and Chinese Five Spice).
The aroma of this gin is delicious oriental, with a bold and intense spiciness. The Szechuan pepper comes through, but is joined by a more delicate lemon thyme and lavender element.
The taste is full of peppery juniper flavours, which are boosted by red chilli flakes and coriander leaves. There is a slight smokiness which lingers too. Towards the finish, it receives a fresh lift from a hint of lime.

This is a bold and aromatic gin, so works best with a neutral tonic - it also holds its own in a cocktail.
For an Eastern inspired gin & tonic, take a large glass filled with ice and add 50ml of the gin. Gently pour over 150ml of Fentimans Premium Indian Tonic, and garnish with some peppercorns and a slice of lime.
This works really well paired with Tomato Juice in a Red Snapper Cocktail. In a tall glass, add 50ml of the gin, 85ml of tomato juice, 4 dashes of Worcestershire Sauce, 2 dashes of Tabasco Sauce and 5ml of Olive Brine. Stir well, season with salt & pepper and garnish with s stick of lemongrass
