Unicum Zwack
One of the oldest herbal liqueurs to be found in Europe, the Unicum recipe comprises over 40 different herbs. Most of these are sourced from within the Carpathian basin, but some are also imported from all over the world (Morocco, China, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Nigeria, the Americas and even Australia).
Its history dates back over 230 years to 1790, and the recipe has remained the same over this time, and is a closely guarded secret of the six generations of the Zwack family who have been producing it in Hungary.
Interesting fact: The name Unicum is said to originate from the words of the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II who was given the drink in 1790. He apparently said "Das ist ein Unikum!" (This is unique).
The liqueur itself is thick and viscous, with a strong herbal aroma and flavour. This is most definitely an acquired taste, but works perfectly as either an aperitif, or digestif.
Today Unicum is regarded as one of the national drinks of Hungary, enjoyed in it's home market and exported across the world.
