The Ardbeg distillery is located on the south side of the Isle of Islay, in the small settlement of Ardbeg from which it takes its name. It has been producing whisky since 1798, but only began commercial production in 1815.
Having changed ownership over the years, it is now owned by the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) group. It is renowned for producing a heavily peated Islay Whisky. The distillery themselves state "Ardbeg Ten Years Old is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all". They use malted barley which is sourced from the maltings in Port Ellen (also on the Island of Islay).
Interesting Fact: The brand name Ardbeg is an anglicisation of 'An Àird Bheag' which is Scottic Gaelic, and means 'The Small Promontory'.
Ardbeg's Wee Beastie is the latest permanent addition to their range, which they have called the rawest, smokiest Ardbeg ever. This is aged for a mere five years, but is definitely a feisty drink with a powerful taste.
The aroma brings bright, fresh herbal notes initially, with background hints of vanilla and pear. Rich strong coffee, sappy pine resin and just a touch of honey-glazed ham in the background. Add a touch of water, and the aromas open further, bringing more herbal notes, along with smoke and black pepper.
On the palate there is a rich explosion of flavour. Chocolate, creosote and tar all coming across. Mid palate fresh eucalyptus, and aniseed come forward, as the raw smoky intensity builds which bring smoked bacon, and savoury meat to the fore.
The finish is long, leaving the mouth with a salty touch, and hints of cocoa and fudge.

Perfect Serve
An intruiging whisky, we recommend this either neat or with just a splash of water which awakens the smoky notes even further
