Description

Bénédictine D.O.M

The history of the French liqueur Bénédictine goes back to 1863. Alexandre Le Grand (a wine merchant by trade) developed the recipe with the help of a local chemist. It was based on medicinal recipes which he had acquired from a grandparent of his, who had worked in a religious foundation.

To assist with the marketing of the product he embellished a story regarding the monks at the French Benedictine Abbey of Fécamp in Normandy. He stated it was produced by them until the devasation of the abbey during the French Revolution. He trademarked the Bénédictine name and used a bottle with its characteristic shape and label.

Further re-infocing his story he added the abbreviation of D.O.M. on the label. This stands for Deo Optimo Maximo (To God, most good, most great), which was used at the beginning of documents created by the Benedictine order.

Similar to many recipes, that of Bénédictine is a closely guarded secret - with only three peopla at any one time having knowledge of it. However it is said to contain a blend of twenty-seven diffrent berries, flowers, herbs, roots, and spices.

Unlike many herbal liqueurs, there is no medicinal quality to this drink. None of the botanicals used in its creation dominates the drink (which makes it hard to identify them). It has a sweet honey flavour which is joined by autumnal fruits, baking spices and a hint of herbs.

Perfect Serve

This is a drink which is delicious enjoyed on its own. We recommend serving either with a single (large) ice cube, or shaking with ice and straining into a glass to chill.

However it also works exceptionally well in the mix. For a quick and easy cocktail, try a Benediction Cocktail. Add 15ml of Bénédictine into a champagne flue with a couple of dashes of orange bitters. The fill the glass with Champagne (or prosecco).

It's also an ingredient in a Frisco Sour, Honeymoon Cocktail, Milk & Honey, Vieux Carre, and perhaps most famously - a Singapore Sling.
