Brouwerij Verhofstede Elixir Christiane Likeur

The history of Brouwerij Verhofstede dates back to 1885, and Stefanie De Jaegher (who later married Julien Verhofstede). Initially Beer was brewed, but in the 1960's a move into spirits occured. Now with over 130 years of experience, and four generations of the same family they continue to create a range of delicious drinks.

Verhofstede's Elixir Christiane is a delicious herbal liqueur, which has added saffron. Indeed, the colour of their Elixir Christiane is a delightful golden yellow, and this is due to the use of this spice.

This is a drink which works perfectly as a drink to raise a toast with (like in the old days). It has an almost burning warmth to it - perfect as an 'in-the-moment' taste. It has a spiciness on the nose, but the flavour is velvet on the tongue.

Whilst this drink is equally at home when used in cooking (trying adding to a rice pudding, apple crumble or sabayon), it was meant as a drink to raise a toast with.

For something longer, try mixing 50ml of the liqueur with 200ml of The Artisan Co's Classic London Tonic in a large glass over ice. Stir gently and garnish with star anise and a few juniper berries..
