Description
Mandarine Napoléon Liqueur
Dating back to the 1800's, Mandarine Napoléon's roots are with Napoléon Bonaparte himself. The drink was custom made for him after he met chemist Antoine-François de Fourcroy who had a reputation for being an excellent distiller.
Some years later, towards the end of the 19th century, a Belgian chemist (Louis Schmidt) discovered the recipe in Fourcroy's diary, and from this created a liqueur based on it. The resulting drink was then sold in Brussels, before being brought to the wider world.
The drink itself is a liquuer based on 10-year aged cognac, and mandarins. Made only with natural ingredients, it is award winning and now found in over 100 countries world wide. The mandarins themselves are selected from the best orchards found in Sicily and Corsica. The other botanicals found within the liqueuer include green and black teas, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove and angelica.
The result is a deliciously rich drink, with a sophisticated palette that develops in your mouth. The colour is a warming golden orange colour. On the nose the mandarin zest comes through strongly, greeted with a woddy spice and undertones of rich cognac. The palette has plenty of the sweet mandarin, joined again with spices; nutmeg and cinnamon. Hints or marmalade and licorice entice the tongue. The finish is delicately smooth, sweet and dry.
Perfect Serve
Easily enjoyed on its own, or equally in the mix. We love this as a Mandarine Sour Cocktail. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice add 50ml of Mandarine Napoléon, 25ml of lemon juice, 3 dashes of Angostura Bitter and 1/2 an egg white (optional). Shake well and strain into a whisky glass. Garnish with a wedge of lemon and a maraschino cherry.
