Enjoy the Premium Taste of Tecán Blanco Tequila

Introduction

Tecán Tequila was founded by 3 friends from The Netherlands, who share a love of premium tequila. Like most people, they started their tequila drinking journey with a lick of salt, a shot of tequila and a bite of lime, (and probably followed by a bad hangover). Not all tequila is the same, and they wanted to show us that Tequila has much more to offer, opening the doors to the wonderful world of premium tequila.

Combining Patience, Expertise and Tradition

Good things come to those who wait, and the making of this high quality Blanco Tequila is a combination of using only the best ingredients, generations of experience, and adopting some of the traditional tools and techniques that were used when the first Tequilas were made.

Harvesting and Cooking

Tecán is made using a 50/50 mix of both highland and lowland Blue Weber Agave. Taking on average 7 years to grow in the iron-rich volcanic soil and cool climate of Jalisco, only the best are selected for Tecán premium tequila. Harvesting is a year round job as each plant matures at a different time. Once harvested, the agave hearts (the Piñas) are steam cooked for 45 hours in traditional brick ovens which softens the fibres, ready for shredding.

Fermentation

The cooked agave is transferred to a mill where the fibres are shredded and compressed, releasing a fermented sugar, called agua miel (honey water). Organic yeast and water are added to the agua miel in large tanks for the fermentation process to begin. Fermentation is commonly between 10-12 hours, but Tecán Tequila extend the process to 50 hours, creating a low alcohol juice (mosto) that will give the tequila a more full bodied agave flavour.

Distilling Process

The mosto is then twice distilled in stainless steel pots. Firstly to seperate and concentrate the alcohol from the mosto, and then to enrich the alcohol content of the tequila. Once distilled, the tequila is ready to be enjoyed.

FAQ's

How did Tecán Tequila get its name?

The name Tecán is the fusion of the words: tequila (the spirit) and bacán (a slang word for a pleasant and attractive person, charaterised by their confidence and flair. They are usually the centre of attention when they walk into a room and brings everybody along for the ride. That's what Tecán is and what it stands for.

What is Blanco Tequila?

Blanco tequila is tequila in it's purest form. Also known as Silver or Plata, it is unaged (or lightly aged, up to 2 months), clear in colour with a strong, natural agave flavour.

Is this tequila suitable for making cocktails?

Tecán Blanco is perfect for making classic cocktails like a Tecán Paloma or a Tecán Margarita.

Are tequila, mezcal and agave spirit the same?

All Tequila is mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila. Tequila is like Champange or Cognac, and has to be made in a specific region in Mexico. Anything made outside of this should be called a Mezcal or an Agave Spirit.

Does Tequila have to be made in Mexico?

Not only does Tequila have to be made in Mexico, it has to be made in the specific regions of Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, or Tamaulipas. The majority are made in the state Jalisco, where the town of Tequila is located.
