Scapegrace Uncommon Gin - Central Otago Early Harvest
As with the whole family of Scapegrace Gin's, the first thing you notice is the bottle. This is a modern take on the original Genever bottles from over 200 years ago.
If gin-makers from then were making gin today Scapegrace believe they would make it like they do, because they make it like they did... with a respect for the history. The bottle is a respectful acknowledgement to everything they taught them.
As part of their 2022 special edition 'Uncommon' range (released in very limited quantities, hence uncommon), they have created two gins which take inspiration from particular areas of New Zealand.
The Otago region in New Zealand is found in the South Island, and the Central Region is the inland part. The area proudly lives by the motto of "A World of Difference". It is an area full of mountain ranges, and the headwaters of the Clutha River and its tributaries.
It's the autumnal harvest found in this region which inspired this 'uncommon' gin - and is fuelled by fresh, ripe and young flavours.
The colour of this gin is refreshing in itself, with a light, pale grassy green colour. The aroma is bright, full of floral notes, ripe stone fruits and a juniper backbone. On the palate its punchy, with an initial vivid nectarine flavour. As the drink warms in the mouth, citrus notes and coriander come through along with savoury pollen notes. As the drink finishes, it leaves a clean savoury note in the mouth with a touch of lavender and juniper.

Perfect Serve
For a deliciously 'uncommon' Gin & Tonic, try mixing with Fentiman's Connoiseurs Tonic. Take a highball glass and fill with ice. Add 50ml of the gin, and fill the glass with the tonic (around 150ml works well). Garnish with a few sprigs of fresh mint, and a twist of lemon zest.
For a take on the White Negroni, take a rocks glass with a large cube of ice and add 20ml of the gin with 15ml of Suze Liqueur. Add a few dashes of Angostura Orange Bitters and fill the glass with a little soda water. Stir well and garnish with a slice of Grapefruit zest and an olive.
