Le Calvados de Christian Drouin - Selection

Since 1960, three generations of the Drouin family have been producing quality Calvados in the Pays d'Auge region of Normandy in France. 

It started with Christian Drouin senior, who in 1960 became the owner of a farm near Honfleur. The farm was planted with cider-apple trees, and Christian decided to produce his own Calvados. In conjunction with a renowned local distiller (Pierre Pivet) he spent over 20 years distilling his first Calvados, and allowed them to rest in ex sherry, port or calvados casks in the farms outbuildings.

In 1969, Christan Drouin Junior joined the business, and in 1979 stocks of calvados were sufficient to start marketing. In 2004, the third generation (Guillaume Drouin) joined. Today, it is Guillaume in conjunction with his father who jointly blend the Calvados.

Their Selction edition came from a desire of Christian Drouin to produce a Calvados which was well balanced on the palate, whilst having an intensely fruit filled bouquet.

This is achieved by combining the distinct, sharp freshness of perry pears, with the intense smoothness of cider apples. After these fruits are distilled in a column still, they are aged in well used casks. This ensures that the subtle balance of the Calvados and its enticing fragrance of fresh fruit is maintained.

Perfect Serve

With its fresh aproma, we find this works best when enjoyed as an aperitif. However it also adds a delicious fruity edge to calvados cocktails. 

How about trying a Calvados Sour Cocktail? In a cocktail shaker filled with ice add 50ml of the Calvados, 20ml of sugar syrup, 25ml lemon juice and 1 egg white (or if preferred, 5 - 6 dashes of Fee Brothers Fee Foam). Shake well for around 20 seconds, and strain into a rocks glass which has a few cubes of fresh ice in. Garnish simply with a dash or two of Angostura aromatic bitters.
